FAQs

When it comes to dental care, especially for your kids, questions are totally expected. And at our pediatric dental office in Long Island, we openly welcome all of your questions. In fact, in this week’s blog, we want to answer some of the most common dental questions we hear.

“Does my son really need to see a dentist twice a year?”

Yes, we typically recommend your child visits us at least every six months. However, there are times when we may need to see him more often. If we see concerns or there is a problem, it’s completely normal for us to request he come in more than two times a year. If his checkups are problem free, six months is usually okay. Regular appointments are important for a variety reasons including getting a deep, professional cleaning, ensuring your child’s teeth and mouth are developing without concern, and catching any potential problems early.

“What’s the purpose of dental x-rays?”

X-rays allow dentists to see below the visible surfaces of teeth and are important for all patients, but especially pediatric patients. X-rays can show how teeth are erupting and if there are any concerns with alignment. This helps identify potential problems before they become big problems. Decay, infections, and gum disease are also detectable through the use of x-rays.

“Why does my son’s breath smell so bad in the morning?”

We’ve all experienced the stale, stinky stench of morning breath. Kids are no different and are sometimes the bigger victims. Why does breath smell so gross each and every morning? It all comes down to saliva. When we sleep, saliva production is decreased. Saliva is the natural way to rinse away bad breath bacteria and when the supply diminishes, bacteria are left to multiply and what’s left is commonly known as morning breath. Usually a proper morning brushing and flossing will take care of the smell. If it doesn’t and your child’s breath is chronically stinky, it may be a sign of something serious. Get to your dentist as soon as possible.

If you have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to give our Long Island pediatric dental office a call. We understand you want the best for your kids, and so do we. That’s why we’re always happy to answer your questions and strive to make dentistry easy and comfortable for both you and your children.
